Primary Club of Australia v Cricketers Club of NSW at Barker College, Hornsby – 13 October 2013

This was the season’s opening fixture for the PCA. The PCA hosted CCNSW, one of our long time traditional rivals. The venue was the beautiful Barker College No 1 ground. After a slightly delayed start, the match was reduced to 37 overs a side.

Before play, both teams observed a minute’s silence as a mark of respect for the recent passing of Faye Brooks, the mum of CCNSW’s President Greg Brooks.

The PCA won the toss and sent the opposition in.

It was pleasing to see that a number of the PCA team were making their debut for the club – Richard Clarke, Lucas Orellana, Aleksandr Yap, Duke Ramachandran and Matthew Cotterell.

Chris Lahoud and Aleksandr Yap opened the bowling. Apart from the loss of an early wicket, the CCNSW batsmen started aggressively and scored quickly, racing to 3-108 from 18 overs. Brett Favell, a sometimes PCA player who was playing for CCNSW, made a very good 48 to get CCNSW into a strong position. Favell exploited the wayward bowling and the short boundaries square of the wicket to score the runs in quick fashion. Then Scarcella came into the attack to join first change Pedley, and with Favell’s departure, the scoring rate dramatically dropped off, largely due to sustained accurate bowling. Wickets started falling at regular intervals, and in the end the PCA managed to contain the CCNSW’s total to a good (but gettable) 208 from the 35 overs. Scarcella finished with excellent figures of 4-14 from his 8 overs.

Orellana and Crouch opened the PCA’s innings and made a solid start, the first wicket falling at 36 from just 5 overs. Crouch was dismissed and Pietersz came in at first drop.  Another very good partnership of 36 in just 5 overs followed, Pietersz scoring 24 runs at a very good rate. He was well supported by Orellana who was compiling what looked to be a match winning innings. Orellana went on to score a very good half century in his debut match for the PCA, but sadly his innings was in vain. The all-too-familiar middle order collapse came. And what a dramatic collapse it was! The PCA batsmen, from a position of 3-97, quickly found themselves at 9-108. It was a very poor batting display from a good position, due largely to some very good bowling from Andrew Dadswell (another PCA player who was playing for CCNSW). Andrew finished with a ‘Michelle’ 5-for, with the brilliant figures of 5-16 from just 7 overs.

The PCA team was:

Joe Scarcella (c), Chris Lahoud (vc), Andrew Pedley, David Pietersz, Ian Camejo, Richard Clarke, Lucas Orellana, Daniel Crouch, Duke Ramachandran, Aleksandr Yap, Matthew Cotterell, Richard Cooney

The result:
