Primary Club of Australia v Troopers CC at Shore ‘A’, Northbridge – 24 November 2013

Comments Off on Primary Club of Australia v Troopers CC at Shore ‘A’, Northbridge – 24 November 2013

This match was hastily arranged to replace the original scheduled match with the NSW Parliamentarians, who had to cancel the fixture. The Troopers is a team that plays in the Moore Park competition and has played in a few Marathon Cricket Events. The Troopers were happy to take up the vacant slot for an opportunity to play the Primary Club of Australia on the exceptional Shore ‘A’ Oval, which surely boasts one of the best cricket grounds and facilities in Sydney.

There were again a few debutants for the Primary Club – Bill ‘Slasher’ McKay, Michael Fahey, Ajit Kumar and S. Hui.

The Troopers won the toss and sent the PCA in. The expansive outfield was in magnificent condition, but the grass was quite plush and it was clear that it was going to take some big hitting (mostly aerial) to reach the boundaries. The wicket was also a little difficult for batsmen – a little on the slow side, but with some variable bounce.

Scarcella and McKay opened the innings and managed a reasonable start, putting on 21 for the first wicket partnership before ‘Slasher’ was run out for 9. Scarcella soon followed, caught behind for 12. Thereafter, there was a steady procession of wickets, with all batsmen making a start but not going on to make any substantial score. The top scorer was Peter ‘Mullos’ Mullane, with 21. Jason ‘Warnie’ Bates hit a handy 17 in his pinch hitter role in the middle order to help get us to a reasonable, but not great, score of 124.

The Troopers came out to bat, and showed good intent early in the run chase. Richard Clarke and Aleksandr Yap took the new ball for the PCA and bowled quite steady, each taking a wicket in their 10 over opening spell. At that point, the Troopers were 2 for 30. A double change saw the skipper Joe Scarcella and Mick McCormick take the ball, with immediate success. Each took a wicket in his opening over. The accurate and penetrating bowling from the pair continued, with run scoring proving more difficult, and a steady procession of wickets followed. During their 12 over ‘partnership’, Joe and Mick tore the heart out of the Troopers middle order, taking the total to 8 for 56 after 22 overs, a position from which the Troopers never recovered. Joe finished with 4-22 from his 8 overs and Mick took 2-14 from his 7overs. Ajit Kumar also chipped in with 1- 12 from his 5 overs of handy medium pace, and Mullos also landed his leggies well for couple of overs and was rewarded with a wicket (1-8).

The Troopers only managed to reach 105 before being bowled out in the 33rd over. An excellent win for the PCA was followed by a very enjoyable post match drink in the superb pavilion, where we were also able to see the last 2 wickets fall to give Australia victory in the First Ashes Test at the ‘Gabba. What better way to end a fabulous day of cricket!

The PCA team was:

Joe Scarcella (c), Bill McKay, A Kumar, Michael McCormick, S Hui, John LeCouteur, Jason Bates, Peter Mullane, Michael Fahey, Richard Clarke, Aleksandr Yap

The result:

PCA 9-124 (34 overs) def Troopers 105 (33 overs)

Batting:

P. Mullane 21 n.o.; J. Bates 17; J LeCouteur 15; J Scarcella 12; R Clark 12

Bowling:

J. Scarcella 4-22 (8 overs); M. McCormick 2-14 (7 overs); A. Kumar 1-12 (5 overs); R. Clark 1-15 (5 overs); A. Yap 1-16 (5 overs); P. Mullane 1-8 (2 overs)
