20 February Insurance Ashes 2020 February 20, 2020 By PCA Admin General, Primary Club News Insurance Ashes, Cricket 0 Nathan Dale, Management Committee, Director of Operations With inspiration provided by Committee Man, Craig Patterson, we pulled together our second Insurance Ashes cricket carnival at North Sydney Oval in February. Originally intending to field six teams, a rain deluge forced a rescheduling of the event to Wednesday 19th February and reduced us to a four-team round-robin tournament. The four teams represented Austbrokers/SURA, CGU, QBE and Steadfast Group, with 360 Underwriting making a welcomed donation. The Primary Club committee pulled the program together for the day, in a manner to give all players and sponsors an opportunity to enjoy the thrill of playing on such a magnificent arena. Thanks go to Rob Stevenson and his Last Man Stands crew of umpires and scorers, plus Brian Owles and his network of volunteers, and Geoff Verco. The primary beneficiary of this event was the Riding for Disabled Illawarra’s new arena fencing project, but the net result of $43k including a grant from NSW Government allowed the Primary Club to also fund training aids for some 23 Rainbow Clubs, who provide swim training for disabled kids. Craig explained the success of the event had been down to the generosity of the sponsors and commitment of those who donated their time and energy to get the most out of the event, plus appearances by two of our Ambassadors – Lisa Sthalekar and Matt De Groot. The latter smashed an amazing 30 runs off just 7 deliveries batting for the CGU team. Steadfast finished the day on top of the ladder with the highest net run rate followed by QBE. The top performers with the bat were Peter Francis and Luke Bartier (both from Steadfast). Of the bowlers, Tim Smith (QBE) and Luke Scott (Austbrokers/SURA) took out the top two spots. President Jim Maxwell was on hand to present the Insurance Ashes trophy to the winning team from Steadfast, and medals to members of the winning team and runners-up. All in all, a very successful event, which we intend to build upon in future seasons. Thanks once again to Craig, Rob, Brian, Geoff and their various teams of helpers, and most of all to the Insurance Companies for their contribution and support!
