The Primary Club of Australia is a registered charity founded in 1974, whose fundamental aim is to give people with disabilities the opportunity to experience the joy and exhilaration that comes from any form of physical activity.
The name comes from the Primary Club, a charity that was formed in England over 50 years ago. A “primary” is a first ball dismissal in cricket—what is called a “golden duck” in Australia, as depicted in our logo.
Our Twelfth Man and Patron is Mark Taylor AO, former Australian Test Cricket Captain. His appointment was announced in our 2015 Annual Report following the passing of our former Twelfth Man, Richie Benaud OBE in April, 2015.
Our President is ABC Cricket Radio Commentator, Jim Maxwell AM.
How do we raise money?
In addition to an annual subscription, our members pay “fines” (as an optional donation) for every primary scored by an Australian player in Test matches, One-day and Twenty20 Cricket internationals during the previous year. During recent Ashes Cricket Series between Australia and our traditional rivals England, a special challenge has been made to English counterparts by our Twelfth Man. While the Australian members pay a $5 optional fine for Australian Golden Ducks, our members pay a $10 optional consideration in tribute of each English Primary that befalls them.
The club also holds many exciting sporting and social functions for members and their guests. These include golf days, a day at the races, the traditional first day of the Sydney Test Match Breakfasts, luncheons, dinners and cocktail parties. These are often associated with Test and ODI matches and are held in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide and are often attended by a number of well known sporting identities.
The Primary Club of Australia is a “charities charity”, as funds are made available to other registered charities to enable the purchase of sporting and recreational equipment and facilities for people with disabilities.
More than $5 million has been raised to date (over $8 million in 2015 dollars) and donated to many projects that include for example the purchase of specialized playground equipment, wheelchairs for various Wheelchair Sports, special equipment for blind cricketers, horse-riding arenas for Riding for the Disabled, hydrotherapy pools and specialized yachts for Sailability.
The Primary Club of Australia Cricket Club
The Primary Club also arranges several cricket matches each year for those members who would like to play in convivial but still competitive games. There are also the regular cricket matches versus the NSW Blind cricket team in Sydney which are always highlights of the season. Overseas cricket tours are also arranged by the Primary Club and previous tours have included, amongst others, the U.K., Sri Lanka and the West Indies. Of course, any fines for all manner of indiscretions on tour contribute to Primary Club fundraising.
Anyone interested in the welfare of people with disabilities is invited to join this unique charity. Of course, membership is mandatory for anyone who has got out first ball in any form of cricket, even games played in the backyard or on the beach.
Former Australia Cricket Captain, Mark Taylor AO, is our Patron and Twelfth Man. Many Australian cricketers, past and present, are members or serve as Vice Presidents of The Primary Club of Australia.
